Avatar 2 is in pre-production! James Cameron is bringing AVATAR back in!

Avatar 2 Coming Next Year

James Cameron has his work cut out for him as the director is planning to work on not just "Avatar 2" but "Avatar 3." According to the Los Angeles Times, 20th Century Fox announced Wednesday that the sequels to last year's science-fiction box office hit will be Cameron's next projects.

Cameron is to begin working on the scripts in early 2011, with the production work on "Avatar 2" to begin as soon as later that year. According to Fox, the LA Times reported, the sequel will likely hit theaters four years from now, in Dec. 2014. The studio hopes to release the third movie in the franchise the following year, in Dec. 2015. Too ambitious?

Cameron doesn't think so. In a news release, Cameron is said he is "looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild." Cameron promises that the same essence that was the first Avatar film will not dimish in either of the sequels.

"In the second and third films," Cameron continued, "which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of 'Avatar's' visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world."

"We had no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of `Avatar,'" Fox studio bosses Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman said in a statement.

According to the LA Times, Cameron's work will also be coming back to the big screen with a 3-D re-release of "Titanic," which is expected to hit theaters in April 2012.

Until then:
